What is bulk billing?

Bulk billing means you don’t have to pay for your medical services from a health professional. For example, after a visit to your doctor, your doctor bills Medicare directly and accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for service. This means you don’t have any out of pocket expense. It is called bulk billing because the GP practice bills Medicare in ‘bulk, that is, a collection of consultation services are billed to Medicare at the same time.

Unfortunately, the amount set by the Government for a consultation is insufficient to cover the costs of providing a high-quality medical service and has not kept up with inflation. The fee set by Medicare for a standard consultation provides the patient with a 50% discount. The costs of opening and running a practice make universal bulk billing of all patients and all practice services unsustainable.

Bulk billing also impacts on the quality of service.

There are a number of bulk billing only clinics in Bunbury. These clinics can only survive by providing what is essentially ‘conveyor belt medicine’ – meaning getting the patient in and out as quickly as possible. They need to do this so they can see enough patients per hour in order to get enough income to run the clinic. It is not uncommon for those Doctors to see >60 patients per day.

Why would I choose to pay a private fee rather than go to a bulk billing clinic?

At Bunbury Family Doctors, we feel our fees reflect the quality of care our patients will receive. Our GPs are

  • highly skilled
  • locally trained
  • all achieved fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practioners.

This means they are specialists of General Practice.

  • regularly engage in Professional Development and continue to up skill in different areas of medicine.
  • committed to their profession
  • committed to living and working in Bunbury and will be able to provide continuation or care for their patients.

At Bunbury Family Doctors you can rest assured that your health is in the best hands.
